Joachim Arts

Associate Professor in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, University of Luxembourg

Joachim Arts is an associate professor at the Luxembourg Centre for Logistics and Supply Chain Management (LCL) and holds visiting appointments at the Eindhoven University of Technology and the Center for Mathematics and Computer Science in Amsterdam.

Joachim’s research interests are in operations research and its applications in supply chain, logistics, maintenance, and business analytics. Much of his research is practice driven as he works with companies such as ASML, Railway operators, Philips, and others.

His research has been published in journals such as Operations Research, European Journal of Operational Research, and IISE Transactions (formerly IIE Transactions).

Prior to joining LCL, Joachim was an assistant professor at Eindhoven University of Technology and a visiting scholar at the MIT Sloan school of management. He is a recipient of the European Doctoral Dissertation Award from the European Federation of Operations Research Societies and a veni career grant from the Netherlands foundation for scientific research.

Chris Caplice

Dr. Caplice serves as the Executive Director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Center for Transportation & Logistics (CTL) where he is responsible for the planning and management of the research, education, and corporate outreach programs for the center. He created and currently serves as Director of the MITx MicroMaster’s Program in Supply Chain Management – the very first MicroMasters credential ever offered. In the first three years more than 200,000 students from 196 different countries have participated in these online courses and more than 20,000 Verified Certificates have been awarded.

Dr. Caplice was selected as the first Silver Family Research Fellow in 2016 in recognition of his contribution to supply chain education and research. Also in 2016, he received the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) Distinguished Service Award.

He is also the founder of the MIT FreightLab – a research initiative that focuses on improving the way freight transportation is designed, procured, and managed. His primary research is in all aspects of freight transportation to include combinatorial procurement auctions, robust planning, portfolio management, performance metrics, and infrastructure design.

In addition to his work at MIT, Dr. Caplice is currently the Chief Scientist for Chainalytics, the leading analytical supply chain consulting firm. In this role, he pioneered the Chainalytics Freight Market Intelligence Consortium (FMIC) that is used by shippers and 3PLs comprising more than $20 billion in annual transportation spend.

Prior to joining MIT, Dr. Caplice held senior management positions in supply chain consulting, product development, and professional services at several companies to include Logistics.com, SABRE, and PTCG. As part of PTCG/SABRE, he led the team that pioneered the concept and use of optimization-based procurement throughout the transportation industry.

Chris received a Ph.D. from MIT in 1996 in Transportation and Logistics Systems. His dissertation on Optimization Based Bidding for Transportation was selected as the winner of the Council of Logistics Management (CLM) Doctoral Dissertation Award and received an Honorable Mention in the 1996 Dissertation Award sponsored by the Transportation Science Section of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS).

Prior to receiving his PhD, Dr. Caplice taught at the Virginia Military Institute for two years and served five years in the Army Corps of Engineers, achieving the rank of Captain. His writing has appeared in numerous academic and business journals and publications. In addition to his PhD, he earned a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the Virginia Military Institute (VMI).

Holger Kömm

Dr. Holger Kömm is Director of the adidas Group Data Science Lab.

He started his career as data science freelancer during his doctorate, before he joined adidas as lead data scientist. His background covers Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science & Statistics, especially Forecasting. He holds a Ph.D. from the Catholic University Eichstätt-Ingolstadt in Applied Statistics. He is further member of the Forecasting Supervisory Board of the German Society for Operations Research and a passionate swimmer.

Holger’s project experience covers areas around Range Optimization, Demand Forecasting, Size Curve Optimization, Media Mix Optimization, Sponsorship Evaluation, Consumer Profiling, Consumer Segmentation, A.I. Development and Prototype to Production next to many more. Holger is further an expert in R programming and Statistical Software Development covering common tools in the Big Data World and further analytical languages like Python or SAS.

Benny Mantin

Benny Mantin is a Professor and the Director of the Luxembourg Centre for Logistics and Supply Chain Management (LCL) at the University of Luxembourg. Professor Mantin joined the LCL in January 2017 but was involved in setting up the centre since September 2016.

His research covers different aspects of dynamic pricing and revenue management, supply chain management, and transportation economics. Using game theory frameworks, Prof. Mantin seeks to explore and understand the strategic interactions between suppliers, vendors, and consumers in different market settings. He also conducts extensive empirical work using retail and airfare data. In his research, Benny addresses topical and compelling questions and his research has been published or accepted for publication in numerous journals such as Marketing Science, Production and Operations Management, Naval Research Logistics, Transportation Research Parts B and E, and European Journal of Operational Research.

Prof. Mantin is a board member of the Journal of Air Transport Management and he is on the advisory board of the Hamburg Aviation Conference.

His research has been recognized and supported by several grants.

Prof. Mantin has been engaged in consulting on air-transport policies and has been involved in numerous projects where he led students to improve processes at different firms.

Prior to joining the LCL, Prof. Mantin was an Associate Professor in the Department of Management Sciences at the University of Waterloo, Canada.  He received his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia, and M.Sc. as well as B.Sc. from Tel-Aviv University.

Javier Tordable

Technical Director, Office of the CTO at Google Cloud

Javier is an engineering leader with a proven track record building innovative software. In his nine years at Google he has been part of Search, Ads, Supply Chain for Data Centers and Cloud. As Tech Lead in Webmaster Tools he built Big Data pipelines at web scale. In Ads he launched the premier reporting platform for internal sales teams. During his time in Supply Chain he was a key architect that drove the vision for end to end automation and managed the data quality team. And as a Technical Director in the Office of the CTO in Google Cloud, he helps the world’s largest companies with their Big Data and AI strategy.

Before Google, Javier was a Software Engineer at Microsoft, writing Machine Learning algorithms for the web search ranking system at Bing. And previously he studied in a Ph.D. program in Mathematics at the University of Valladolid in Spain.
